Cuntpuncher

Mean-spirited deathcore/brutal death metal from Cologne, Germany. Awaiting The Fist is exactly what I want in heavy music: relentless riff-heavy slam with growly gutteral vocals. This little fucker of an e.p. starts off strong and does not quit for its 20-minute running time. The breakdown in "Postmortem Facefuck" is simply amazing. The band is still at it and their sound has evolved into a more "typical" brutal death metal groove, solid but nothing special. Check 'em out at their prime in 2008.

Ménage À Trois

One of my favorite films of all time is Jörg Buttgereit's super-8 masterpiece Nekromantik. Not sure what that says about me or my celluloid tastes but I have never viewed the contemporary horror film the same way since I saw what a bunch of West Germans were able to create with absolutely no money, no equipment and no fucking shame back in 1987. I'm sure the three people who check this blog out are more then likely familiar with this piece of cinematic corpse-fucking so I figured I'd post one of the more beautiful (?) sides of the flick - the music. The sadly defunct Barrel Entertainment's DVD release of Nekromantik 2 included a CD of the soundtracks for both films. So here I present one of the more twistedly original compositions to ever accompany a film about necrophilia. From the demented abattoir opus "Surprise" to the darkly sweet "At Home" and the suicidal "Drunk," it is a 25-minute joyride through chaos. I think the music to the second film is somewhat derivative so I didn't include it although if I get a comment or two maybe I'll get around to it. Regardless, enjoy.

Answered my own question...

Well, ask and you shall receive, no? No sooner had I posted some babble about Regurgitate's first split 7" I got word that the "forgettable" A-side band Vaginal Massaker actually DID forge along through the 1990's and even released a CD! Of course they completely changed their sound from grindnoise to a somewhat restrained death metal vibe (think very, very generic Death) and that's about it. Nothing noteworthy whatsoever, even the album cover screams generic (or terrible, depending on your point of view). Actually, the scans I could find of the cover were so awful that I actually rebuilt it myself, it was so poorly done. Oh well. The band's lineup completely changed from the Regurgitate days as well so it begs the question is it really the same band or just someone grabbing onto the coattails of a (somewhat) offensive name? Who knows. As a final fly in the putrid stew, I listened to the album several times and the numbered track names simply do not fit with the given names of the songs (i.e. on song #3 "Grunge" they repeat "Fuck Off And Die" over and over which makes me think that's actually the supposed song #8 "Fuck Off And Die") so I've tried to adjust it to what my poor German skills (c'mon I'm only on level two of Rosetta Stone!!) can deduce. Enjoy the timeworn tunes....

A Is For Anal Massaker!

After putting up an Anal Massaker 7" the other week, how could I not go ahead and upload this one as well... I bought this split almost twenty years ago and now I got little Cookie Monster toys lying around every room in the house. Hopefully my son won't grow up to be in a knock-off German blur three-piece but you never know...

German nuttiness...

Anal Massaker are the less-produced, more retarded, not as witty German version of Anal Cunt (they even have a song called "Another A.C. Song") - they surfaced around 1989 and thanks to Schnauf Records got a few 7-inchers released to solidify their status as early blur pioneers (or plagiarists depending on which side of the Atlantic you are on). I can't tell if the record is recorded live or in a room with a bunch of friends, there is definite applause but it seems too sparse to be from a live gig. Or maybe that was the extent of the grind audience back then. While terribly recorded, mixed and rehearsed, Bis Wir Schielen has a definite charm, a good groove starting off each 30-second blast of noise. During this recording they were a 3-piece; guitarist/founder Toni Mastropaolo has since converted the band into a more annoying noisecore solo project (y'know the ones with the one-track 948 Songs releases). Too bad, a throwback old-school A.C. vs. A.M. 7" record would have really started the 2010's off right.

What a week...

(from their record label...) Shepherd was founded during the depressive and cold winter of 2001/2002 out of four individuals who share their fascination and love for true classic slow moving rock. Egos have been kept outside and the guys started to play. So the story goes: rehearsals went pretty good, gigs followed. Among building a fanbase around their hometown Berlin they slayed crowds at 2002's acclaimed Stoned From The Underground festival as well as on tour with the Greg Anderson and Stephen O'Malley's drone outfit Sunn O))) and top-notch noise heroes Isis.
After the critically acclaimed debut Laments (2003), the guys locked themselves in the studio and recorded nine tracks that demonstrate a huge step forward and a new direction. Shepherd kicked in their 70's riffrock beliefs and noise/sludge influences. Whilst still immersed a hundred feet deep in doom tradition, they opened their hearts to the likes of Trapeze and Zeppelin on one hand, and the sick, slow-moving sludge of Grief and 13 on the other. Shepherd brought these new touchstones together and The Coldest Day's completely new sound was the result.
This album is one of the few that is a complete listen from start to finish. Sure, some parts are better then others ("Wednesday" is a real standout) but it flows nicely from one day to another like a bad dream. "Doomsday" is just a miserably depressing 17-minute dirge of noise and babbling, prefect background noise for a suicide. Great for a long drive or standing in line at the post office. The band broke up in 2004, RIP.
